What to do if you've lost your car service history

Losing a service history book is far more common than most people realise. It can happen when you move house, inherit a vehicle, buy second-hand without full documentation, or simply misplace paperwork over many years of ownership.

The logbook is not the only place your history exists, though. Garages and dealerships keep their own records, digital and paper, of every service they carry out. Those records belong to your vehicle, and they can be retrieved.

So the first thing to do is stop assuming the history is gone for good. More often than not, the records are sitting in a garage database and just need to be requested.

Can garages retrieve old service records?

Yes. Most garages and franchised dealerships keep service records for 10–15 years, and sometimes longer. Newer workshops store everything digitally, and a lot of older paperwork has since been scanned or archived.

Doing that yourself is the hard part. You would have to work out every garage that might have touched the car, contact each one, and chase them until the picture is complete. That is the legwork we take off your hands.

Even a partial history counts for something. Every confirmed service adds credibility and helps reassure a buyer or insurer that the car has been looked after.
