Secure an import permit from the International Trade Administration Commission (ITAC) and a letter of authority (LOA) from the National Regulator for Compulsory Specifications (NRCS).
Book shipping from Southampton or Tilbury to Durban, Cape Town or Port Elizabeth with full marine insurance.
Prepare to pay customs duty, VAT and Ad Valorem excise duty before the vehicle leaves the port.
1. Permit applications and eligibility
Only specific categories can import used vehicles, including returning residents, immigrants with permanent residence and classic vehicles over 40 years old. Confirm eligibility before committing to purchase.
Apply to ITAC for an import permit and to the NRCS for a Letter of Authority (LOA). Submit proof of ownership, passport, permanent residence or work visa and evidence that you used the vehicle abroad for more than six months.
- Keep certified copies of all documents; South African authorities require notarised paperwork.
- Set aside several weeks for permit processing.
2. Shipping to South Africa
Roll-on/roll-off sailings reach Durban most frequently, with typical transit times of 21–30 days. Containers are advisable for high-value or classic cars.
Arrange marine insurance and make sure the vehicle is secure, alarm systems are off and a spare key is available for port handlers.
- Departure ports: Southampton, Tilbury, Sheerness.
- Arrival ports: Durban, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth (Gqeberha).
- Clean the car thoroughly to comply with Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) inspections.
3. Customs clearance and duties
Submit the Bill of Entry (Form DA 500) to the South African Revenue Service (SARS) with your import permit and LOA. SARS calculates customs duty (usually 25%) plus VAT at 15%.
Ad Valorem excise duty applies to many passenger vehicles based on the customs value and vehicle type. Pay the Port Health and storage fees promptly to avoid delays.
- Vehicles must remain in bond until all duties are paid.
- Keep proof of foreign residency to claim any applicable rebates.
- Classic cars may qualify for reduced rates subject to NRCS approval.
4. Registration and licensing
After customs clearance, obtain a roadworthy certificate and microdot the vehicle identification marks as required by the National Traffic Information System (NaTIS).
Register the car at your local licensing department within 21 days and secure South African plates. Maintain the UK service history to validate mileage and future resale value.
Can anyone import a used car into South Africa?
No. Only specific categories such as returning residents, immigrants with permanent residence, and vintage vehicle collectors can import a used car. Each category requires supporting documentation and pre-approved permits.
What taxes apply when the vehicle lands in South Africa?
SARS collects customs duty (often 25%), 15% VAT and Ad Valorem excise duty based on the vehicle’s customs value. Port storage, handling and inspection fees are additional.
How long do permit approvals take?
ITAC and NRCS approvals typically take four to six weeks, so start applications early. Shipping should only be booked after the permits are issued to avoid the vehicle being refused entry.

Is Service History Stored Online?
Many drivers assume there is a central online database where they can instantly look up a car’s full service history. Unfortunately, service records in the UK don’t work that way. While some servicing information is stored online, a large portion still sits within dealership systems, independent garage software or old paper files.

What Should Full Service History Look Like
A full service history (FSH) is one of the most valuable documents a car can have. It proves the vehicle has been maintained correctly, helps retain value, reassures buyers and supports warranty claims. But with a mix of paper books, digital records, invoices and independent servicing, many drivers are unsure what a complete history should actually look like.

How Do I Know If My Car Has a Full Service History?
nderstanding whether your car has a full service history (FSH) is essential for protecting its value, supporting warranty claims and ensuring long-term reliability. Yet with records split across digital systems, garages and old paper invoices, many drivers aren’t sure whether their vehicle actually has a complete history — or only a partial one.

How Reliable Are Third-Party Car Service History Checks Compared to Dealership Records?
When looking into a used car’s background or preparing documents for a warranty claim, understanding the reliability of service history sources is essential. Drivers often compare dealership records, which are seen as the official source, against third-party service history checks, which vary widely in accuracy.
