Secure a valuation report and emissions data to calculate Maltese registration tax accurately.
Plan shipping to the Freeport at Marsaxlokk or the Grand Harbour in Valletta with reputable RoRo carriers.
Schedule the Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (VRT) immediately after customs clearance.
1. Paperwork before the car leaves the UK
Notify DVLA of the export and keep the V5C/4 export slip. Collect the purchase invoice, service history and emissions certificate (CO₂ g/km).
If you are relocating, gather proof of residence change to apply for duty relief on one personal vehicle.
- Transport Malta requires a valuation from an approved valuer for registration tax.
- Classic vehicles over 30 years old may qualify for reduced rates.
2. Shipping routes and timing
Regular RoRo services depart Southampton and Tilbury, typically arriving in Malta within 12–16 days. Container shipping is available for prestige vehicles.
Ensure the vehicle is clean, fuel is below a quarter tank and alarms are deactivated before handover to the shipping line.
- Popular arrival ports: Marsaxlokk Freeport, Valletta Grand Harbour.
- Arrange marine insurance to cover the full replacement value.
- Keep spare keys accessible for port handling teams.
3. Customs clearance and taxes
On arrival submit the Single Administrative Document (SAD) and valuation paperwork. Customs duty is usually 10% and VAT is 18% unless relief applies.
Registration tax is calculated using a formula that considers CO₂ emissions, age and vehicle value. Transport Malta provides an online calculator to estimate the amount.
- Pay customs and VAT before the vehicle leaves bonded storage.
- Keep all invoices for proof of expenditure and valuation appeals.
- Temporary permits allow limited road use before full registration.
4. Vehicle testing and registration
Book the Vehicle Roadworthiness Test (VRT) at an authorised station. They will inspect emissions, safety equipment and verify the VIN.
Submit the VRT pass certificate, valuation and tax payment receipt to Transport Malta to obtain registration plates and pay annual circulation tax. Maintain UK service history records for maintenance planning.
How is registration tax calculated in Malta?
Transport Malta combines the vehicle’s CO₂ emissions, age and customs value to calculate the registration tax. Use the official calculator to get a personalised estimate before shipping.
Can I claim relief on customs duty when moving to Malta?
Yes. New residents can request relief on duty and VAT for one personal vehicle if it has been registered in their name for at least six months and they transfer their normal residence to Malta.
Do I need a VRT before I can register the car?
Yes. Passing the Vehicle Roadworthiness Test is mandatory before Transport Malta issues registration plates and calculates annual circulation tax.

Is Service History Stored Online?
Many drivers assume there is a central online database where they can instantly look up a car’s full service history. Unfortunately, service records in the UK don’t work that way. While some servicing information is stored online, a large portion still sits within dealership systems, independent garage software or old paper files.

What Should Full Service History Look Like
A full service history (FSH) is one of the most valuable documents a car can have. It proves the vehicle has been maintained correctly, helps retain value, reassures buyers and supports warranty claims. But with a mix of paper books, digital records, invoices and independent servicing, many drivers are unsure what a complete history should actually look like.

How Do I Know If My Car Has a Full Service History?
nderstanding whether your car has a full service history (FSH) is essential for protecting its value, supporting warranty claims and ensuring long-term reliability. Yet with records split across digital systems, garages and old paper invoices, many drivers aren’t sure whether their vehicle actually has a complete history — or only a partial one.

How Reliable Are Third-Party Car Service History Checks Compared to Dealership Records?
When looking into a used car’s background or preparing documents for a warranty claim, understanding the reliability of service history sources is essential. Drivers often compare dealership records, which are seen as the official source, against third-party service history checks, which vary widely in accuracy.
