Submit the vehicle for temporary import permission before it leaves the UK to speed up customs in Limassol or Larnaca.
Gather emissions data to calculate Cyprus registration tax and annual road tax.
Plan transport from the port to the Department of Road Transport for inspection and registration.
1. Pre-export preparation
Notify the UK DVLA of permanent export and retain proof of ownership. Obtain a valuation and emissions certificate (CO₂ g/km) to estimate registration charges in Cyprus.
If you are relocating, compile residency documents to qualify for relief from import duty and VAT on one vehicle.
- V5C or UK export certificate.
- Bill of lading once the vehicle is loaded.
- Insurance cover for transit and while driving on temporary plates.
2. Shipping to Cyprus
Sailings depart from Southampton, Portsmouth and Tilbury, usually to Limassol. Transit time is around 14–18 days.
RoRo shipping is popular and cost-effective. Container shipping suits high-value vehicles that need additional protection.
- Clean the car to meet biosecurity checks before loading.
- Ensure the battery is charged and alarm systems are disabled for RoRo sailings.
- Carry copies of loading photos for insurance evidence.
3. Customs clearance and taxation
File the customs declaration (SAD) on arrival. VAT at 19% is payable on the customs value unless you qualify for transfer-of-residence relief.
Registration tax is calculated using CO₂ emissions and vehicle age. Use the Department of Road Transport calculator to estimate the fee before shipping.
- Vehicles over five years old may face additional inspections.
- Temporary import permits allow you to drive for 30 days before paying registration tax.
- Keep ferry and transport invoices for proof of landed cost.
4. Registration and inspection
Book a vehicle inspection at the Department of Road Transport. They will check the chassis number, mileage and emissions documentation.
Once taxes are paid and the inspection is complete, submit the TOM 130 application to obtain Cypriot plates and road tax. Retain UK service history to support resale and maintenance planning.
How much does it cost to register a UK car in Cyprus?
Registration tax varies with CO₂ emissions and vehicle age. Expect several hundred euros for low-emission vehicles and more for larger engines. Use the online calculator with your emissions certificate for an accurate estimate.
Can I avoid paying VAT when relocating to Cyprus?
If you are moving your normal residence to Cyprus you may qualify for VAT and duty relief on one vehicle, provided you owned and used it in the UK for at least six months before relocation.
Do I need to change the headlights on UK cars in Cyprus?
Most UK vehicles require headlight adjustment to dip correctly for driving on the right. Arrange this before the registration inspection to avoid delays.

Is Service History Stored Online?
Many drivers assume there is a central online database where they can instantly look up a car’s full service history. Unfortunately, service records in the UK don’t work that way. While some servicing information is stored online, a large portion still sits within dealership systems, independent garage software or old paper files.

What Should Full Service History Look Like
A full service history (FSH) is one of the most valuable documents a car can have. It proves the vehicle has been maintained correctly, helps retain value, reassures buyers and supports warranty claims. But with a mix of paper books, digital records, invoices and independent servicing, many drivers are unsure what a complete history should actually look like.

How Do I Know If My Car Has a Full Service History?
nderstanding whether your car has a full service history (FSH) is essential for protecting its value, supporting warranty claims and ensuring long-term reliability. Yet with records split across digital systems, garages and old paper invoices, many drivers aren’t sure whether their vehicle actually has a complete history — or only a partial one.
